Bradgate Pub: Nearly a Year Later

Looking Back at the Bradgate Pub Refurbishment Almost 12 Months On

There is always something satisfying about seeing a completed refurbishment for the first time.

The furniture is newly installed. The finishes are pristine. The venue is ready to welcome customers again, and everything looks exactly as it was intended to.

But for commercial furniture manufacturers, opening day only tells part of the story.

The more interesting question comes months later.

How does the furniture look after thousands of meals, drinks, conversations, busy weekends, cleaning routines and customers have put it through its paces?

Recently, we had the opportunity to return to Bradgate Pub, almost a year after TRL Handmade Furniture manufactured the furniture for its extensive refurbishment.

The answer was difficult to miss.

The tables still looked incredible.

Returning to Bradgate

Bradgate was a significant project for TRL.

The venue underwent an extensive refurbishment covering both its internal and external areas, with TRL responsible for manufacturing the timber and steel components required for the furniture throughout the project.

It was also part of a much larger relationship.

Bradgate represented the fourth pub refurbishment TRL had completed for the group. We have subsequently worked on their fifth establishment, and there is already a sixth project on the horizon.

For TRL CEO Tim Lawson, there is also a personal connection behind the partnership. The project came through Andy Hunt, a lifelong friend of Tim's, who engaged TRL to support the group's refurbishment programme.

What began through a long-standing relationship has developed into a series of commercial projects built around trust, delivery and consistency.

Working Alongside the Everards Brewery Design Team

Every hospitality refurbishment has its own identity.

The objective at Bradgate was therefore never to simply manufacture a collection of generic pub tables and place them throughout the venue.

TRL worked alongside the Everards Brewery design team, following specific designs and colour requirements created for the refurbishment.

Our role was to take those requirements and turn them into furniture capable of delivering visually and commercially.

That meant understanding how each piece would sit within the wider scheme while manufacturing it for an environment where furniture is expected to work extremely hard.

The timber and steel components were manufactured specifically for the project, giving TRL control over the construction, dimensions and finishing required to bring the designs to life.

The result was furniture that felt integrated into the venue rather than simply supplied to it.

The Deadline That Could Not Move

There was another important factor driving the Bradgate project: time.

The pub needed to reopen ahead of the festive rush of 2025.

For hospitality businesses, the weeks approaching Christmas can represent one of the most commercially important trading periods of the year. A refurbishment delay is therefore more than an inconvenience. It can mean losing valuable weeks of business.

TRL had to work within a tight programme, coordinating manufacturing around the wider refurbishment schedule and ensuring that the furniture was ready when the venue needed it.

Timber components had to be manufactured and finished. Steel components had to be produced. Colours and designs had to remain consistent with the agreed scheme.

And everything had to come together in time for reopening.

It did.

Bradgate opened its doors ready for the festive period.

Then the Real Test Began

Once a hospitality refurbishment opens, the furniture stops being part of a design project and starts becoming part of a working business.

Tables are used continuously.

Customers move chairs and benches. Drinks are placed down and occasionally spilled. Plates arrive and disappear throughout service. Staff clean surfaces repeatedly. Furniture is moved when spaces need to be rearranged.

A busy pub gives furniture very little opportunity to rest.

Bradgate is exactly that kind of venue. It serves significant volumes of food and drink and welcomes a steady flow of customers.

That made returning to the pub months later particularly interesting for us.

Almost a year of real hospitality use had passed since the refurbishment.

And the furniture still looked remarkably close to new.

Why 12 Months Later Matters More Than Day One

It is easy to photograph furniture immediately after installation.

Everything should look good at that point.

The more meaningful photograph is the one taken after months of use.

That is where the quality of commercial furniture begins to reveal itself.

A hospitality operator is not purchasing furniture for the opening weekend. The furniture needs to continue contributing to the appearance and operation of the venue year after year.

When tables begin showing premature wear, the problem extends beyond aesthetics.

Replacement furniture costs money. Repairs create additional work. Inconsistent furniture can undermine a carefully considered interior. Constant maintenance places another demand on an already busy hospitality team.

Durability is therefore not simply a manufacturing benefit. It is a commercial consideration.

That is why revisiting Bradgate was such a rewarding part of this project.

The venue was busy. The furniture had been thoroughly used. Yet the tables continued to look excellent.

Built for Busy Hospitality Environments

At TRL, commercial furniture projects are approached differently from furniture intended for occasional use.

Hospitality furniture needs to combine appearance with practicality.

It must complement the designer's vision while being capable of operating within a demanding environment.

Bradgate provided a particularly strong example of that balance.

The furniture was produced to meet specific design and colour requirements, allowing it to support the character of the newly refurbished venue.

At the same time, the construction needed to reflect what the furniture would experience once the pub reopened.

That combination matters.

A beautiful table that cannot withstand daily hospitality use is not a successful commercial table.

Equally, a durable table that ignores the design of the venue has failed another important part of the brief.

The objective is to deliver both.

From the Fourth Pub to the Sixth

Perhaps one of the strongest measures of a successful commercial project is what happens after it is completed.

Bradgate was the fourth pub TRL had refurbished for the group.

Since then, we have completed furniture for their fifth establishment.

Now, a sixth is on the horizon.

For us, repeat projects are particularly meaningful because each new commission reflects confidence built through the previous one.

The relationship allows our team to understand the operator's requirements more deeply with every project while still responding to the individual character and design direction of each venue.

No two pubs need to look identical.

But every project needs the same foundations: careful manufacturing, dependable delivery and furniture capable of performing in the real world.

Commercial Furniture Should Tell a Story Years Later

Bradgate looked fantastic when the refurbishment was completed.

Nearly 12 months later, it still does.

And perhaps that second statement is the more important one.

Commercial furniture should not be designed purely for the moment the doors reopen and the photographs are taken.

It should be designed for everything that follows.

  • The Friday evenings.

  • The Sunday lunches.

  • The Christmas parties.

  • The busy bar service.

  • The spills.

  • The cleaning.

  • The constant movement.

  • The thousands of customers who will sit around those tables without ever thinking about how they were made.

That is ultimately the job.

At Bradgate, almost a year of busy hospitality trading later, the furniture continues to look exceptional.

For TRL, there are few better demonstrations of a successful project than that.
